TRAFFIC EDUCATION AND ENFORCEMENT PROGRAMS

Motorists
Think of the Impact You can make!

Pedestrians have the right-of-way on sidewalks and when crossing the streets at non-signalized intersections, crosswalks and signalized intersections with the green, walk, and flashing "don't walk" signals.

  • Drive according to speed limits and road conditions. The presence of pedestrians is a condition requiring reduced speed. Always expect pedestrians in residential areas, business districts and near schools and parks.
  • Watch for pedestrians and be prepared to stop at all times.
  • Obey all traffic laws - Stop for yellow and red traffic signals and stop signs. Be sure to stop behind the limit line or crosswalk (where painted.)
  • Make turning movements with caution. Most crashes involving motor vehicles and pedestrians occur when the driver is turning. Be especially on the lookout for pedestrians before turning right on a red signal.

Remember: When you park your car and you walk to your destination ...You are a pedestrian, too. Treat others as you would want them to treat you.

Pedestrians
Think of the Imprint You can make!

Pedestrians have the right-of-way at non-signalized intersections, crosswalks (painted and unmarked), and signalized intersections with the green or walk signal.

  • Before stepping off a curb, make eye contact with oncoming drivers in the lane nearest you; step into the traffic lane when the vehicle slows and the driver yields. Proceed across the intersection, lane by lane as the traffic yields.
  • Be safe, be smart, be seen! The color of your clothing can blend into the scenery or make you stand out.
  • Walk assertively, but defensively.... most crashes between a motor vehicle and a pedestrian occur when the driver is making a turn.

You may be right....Don't be dead right!

  • Pedestrians do not have the right-of-way when crossing a street mid-block or at signalized intersection when the light is red, yellow or there is a "don't walk" sign.
  • When crossing mid-block you must not impede any oncoming traffic.
  • You may not step out into traffic which is so close it would create a hazard.

At signalized intersections, cross only with the green or walk signal. If the don't walk signal starts flashing, finish crossing but don't start to cross.
